Eight of the world’s top ten companies such as Apple, IBM, Intel, Hewlet Packard, Dell, Oracle, Lotus and Microsoft have a substantial presence in Ireland. With a well trained workforce, excellent access and top-quality telecommunications infrastructure , Waterford presents an excellent location for ICT companies. In addition to these strengths, specific measures have been put in place to support the ICT sector. Specifically Waterford Institute of Technology established the Telecommunications Software & Systems Group (TSSG) a resource of 85 experts including programmers, engineers and research students. The TSSG’s main area of research is communications software services encompassing emerging architectures for management of complex telecommunications and internet systems as well as next generation service development and deployment. The TSSG can bring strong expertise in the areas of distributed systems and service oriented architectures, particularly when applied to communications and telecommunications domain. The TSSG is made up of two primary divisions – the Research Division and the Commercial Division. Thus, TSSG pursues a combination of academic and commercial excellence. TSSG is currently managing a portfolio of 30 projects. TSSG is the largest group in Ireland engaged in such a critical mass of activity relating to communications software services and one of the most successful integrated research clusters in any academic domain in Ireland.
